Robert Mondavi Private Selection Sauvignon Blanc
|Region||California, United States|
|Brand||Roberto Mondavi Winery|
2014 turned out to be a wonderfully generous vintage. The year started out and stayed warm and dry from spring all the way through harvest. Conditions, with above-average temperatures at night, proved to be near ideal for bringing grapes to maturity. Harvest was remarkably smooth through the end of September, when the region’s one high heat kicked harvest in high gear. All of this, combined with uniform growing days, is exactly what winemakers hope for. Across the board, the fruit was incredible, providing a richness and layering of flavors only seen in exceptional years.
Monterey County (60%) was the primary sourcing area for the 2014 Robert Mondavi Private Selection Sauvignon Blanc. Fruit was also harvested in Santa Barbara County and Central Valley. These areas are all located within California’s Central Coast American Viticulture Area (AVA).
The fruit was harvested in the cool of the night and early morning hours, then immediately pressed to tank to capture and preserve its fresh, pure juice. To accentuate the crisp, zesty character and enhance the texture and complexity of our coastal Sauvignon Blanc grapes, we fermented the must (juice and skins) in stainless steel tanks at 50°F and aged it sur lie (on the yeast lees) for several months. The result is a fresh, fruit-forward Sauvignon Blanc with an extra dimension of richness.

The 2014 growing season created Sauvignon Blanc with aromas of green grass, grapefruit, and lemon rind, with green pepper and steely mineral notes. Flavors of grass, lemon, honeysuckle, and melon complement the nose. A bright, clean acidity makes it crisp and expressive—a very nice summer wine.
Robert Mondavi established his namesake winery in 1966 with a vision to create Napa Valley wines that would stand in the company of the world’s finest. He chose To Kalon Vineyard in the heart of the Napa Valley as the home for Robert Mondavi Winery. This first-growth vineyard, located in Oakville, California, is renowned for producing some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the world, as well as for its Sauvignon Blanc grapes, from which Mr. Mondavi crafted his signature wine, Fumé Blanc.
Along with To Kalon Vineyard, Robert Mondavi Winery sources grapes from some of Napa Valley’s finest vineyards, including Stag’s Leap (Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc) and Carneros (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay).
Mr. Mondavi believed that wines should reflect their origins, that they are the product of the soil, the climate, and the careful stewardship of those precious resources. He also believed in combining the newest techniques and technology with time-honored winemaking traditions.
